The Corona pandemic with its disastrous effects has not spared the Minority Batwa communities and one is the community on the foothills of lake Bunyonyi. The Batwa people who are also called the Godfathers of the forest entirely depend on tourists visits, tips and gratitudes but its 5 months now they haven’t seen a single tourist.

While many economies and families have been put at the verge of collapse & hunger, The Batwas biggest challenge has been food shortage otherwise deaths would start to occur. In Addition to Gorilla Walking Safaris’s conservation support initiative to the Batwa, We opted to feed the 50 households with a US$ 1000 budget fund every month until they start seeing tourist arrivals again and the Batwa can re-collect their lives together once again.

Many school local kids have not been outside of their school & home areas, not even to the near game reserves or tourists sites in the same locality. They have neither seen an elephant nor have they seen a lion in the wild. This is seen as luxury even when it’s so cheap for school kids to enter into a national park. Yes, because they can not afford it.

With a $1500 Fund from our guests, twice a year we support a section of school kids from the unprivileged rural locations either karamoja, western Uganda or southern Uganda where our guests visit and have 50 school kids visit a national park or tourist site . Not only are they excited to see the wildlife but learn the beneficiary of the wildlife to the economy and have conservation lectures from the National Park wardens.

On the southern Parts of Bwindi forest in Kisoro region is an association of former poachers who opted to growing Arabic coffee as an alternative to survive after Bwindi was gazetted as a world heritage site. Having been poachers in the for bush meat and as away to protect the gorillas, The poachers were given alternative income generating activities like bee keeping, coffee growing among others.

With a $1300 fund from our guests, twice a year we support the former poachers turned coffee farmers with pest control spray, harvest and transport the coffee to the market. When our guests visit on one of the trips for a farm to coffee tour, the farmers are supported and in return offer a thankful souvenir of mountain gorilla coffee beans to carry back home.

On boarder of Uganda and Rwanda south of Lake Bunyonyi Kabale lives a minority group of the Batwa ethnic group. The Batwa known as the godfathers of the Bwindi forest and occupied the Bwindi before it was gazetted into a world heritage site. The government of Uganda relocated them to different areas and the hill of Lake Bunyonyi were part of them. A Small primary school for kids exists on these foothills.

With a $750 fund, from our guest trip dollars thrice a year (Each Term/every after 3 months), we support the school and the 185 school kids with scholastic materials including textbooks and writing chalk for better learning. We are also planning to acquire a motor boat for the kids that live across the lake access the school.
