What is coronavirus?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person.
The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. COVID-19 is spreading from person to person in China, and has been detected to be spreading in some 40 other countries outside China. Right now, the greatest risk of infection is for people in China and those who have travelled to China. Risk of infection is dependent on exposure. Close contacts of people who are infected are at greater risk of exposure, for example health care workers and close contacts of people who are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. The Ministry of Health continues to closely monitor the situation.

The best way to prevent coronavirus

The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19. There are simple everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses.

These include: avoiding close contact with people who are sick, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should: stay home when you are sick, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash, clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces e.g. doors.

Us the tour operators like the Gorilla walking safari will adhere to the ministry of health guidelines to save uganda and the world at large.

Corona Virus Pandemic

How Uganda Is Managing The COVID 19 Pandemic

President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the current president of uganda has been named as the great leader & admired by many east African citizens in the fight against the Pandemic. “Sometimes Dictatorship is the best solution to put things in order” Many East African from Kenya and Tanzania noted. Exactly as did by the 30+ Years Ugandan leader. On March 20th 2020 President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, closed all schools and religious services, mass weddings and funerals, banned all public and cultural gatherings for minimum 30 days

On  March 22, 2020 Uganda’s airport and all land borders were closed to passenger travel for 30 days as trial period and further communication to be announced.

On 25, 2020 all public transportation, including buses, taxis, trains, and boda bodas (Motor bikes) were stopped for 14 days while only food items are to be sold in the markets. Social distancing was the major point for this directive

Furthermore on many more national addresses, On March 30, 2020 all private passenger travel is banned. Only government, army, police and other essential personnel were allowed to use private vehicles. The local Ugandan can walk or cycle to the market or pharmacies. Permission to use private vehicles for emergencies must be sought through the presidents district representatives we call the RDC (resident District commissioners). The whole idea was to limit or stop people from illegally offering their private vehicles as public transport andor use it for upcountry travel in a bid to stop possible viral spread.

On April 1st  2020 all shops except those selling food and medicine were closed. Only Factories remain open if employers were able to provide accommodation for their employees on premises. Market vendors would continue only and only if they agree to sleep at work. This was in a bid to avoid possible spread of the virus to families. This went in effect for 14 days.

On same date Museveni announced a curfew that started from 7pm to 6:30am in the morning. No movement of people while allowing only Cargo and essential workers on this.

On 8th Apirl 2020 Motorbikes we call the Boda Bodas and bicycle riders are banned from operating after 2pm.

On April 14th  2020  each and the seemingly partly lockdown was extended for more 21 days, up to May 5, 2020. This doesn’t guarantee that it shall be open but I guess we shall have more days.. For safety, We at Gorilla Walking Safaris Support this idea whatsoever.

How can I help slow the spread COVID-19?

COVID-19 is mainly spread from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected individual speaks, coughs or sneezes at close range

The CDC has also warned it may be possible for a person to become infected by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes.

There is currently no vaccine against COVID-19. Here are some things you can do to help fight the spread of COVID-19. The WHO recommends:

  • Washing your hands regularly with an alcohol-based sanitizer, or with soap and water.
  • Maintaining distance of at least 1 metre (3 feet) between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Seeking medical care immediately if you are showing symptoms
