NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK
The park is found on the border of Rwanda and Burundi Contiguous with Kibira National Park of Burundi. The Nyungwe rainforest is probably the best-preserved montane rainforest in Africa. The park is comprised of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs.
The park is known to be home to great primate chimpanzees which is the main attraction in the park. With its 13 primates species Many of these animals are restricted-range species that are only found in the Albertine Rift montane forests ecoregion in Africa. In fact, the number of endemic species found here is greater than in any other forest in the Albertine Rift Mountains that has been surveyed, Nyungwe National Park never disappoint.
What to see and do in Nyungwe National Park
Chimpanzee Tracking:
This is the main activity in Nyungwe National Park. It is done in cyamudongo which is part of Nyungwe forest . It is lifetime experience to encounter the close relatives of humans in this natural forest.
Nature walks:
There are many nature walk trails in Nyungwe some can be done in half day and others full day. They have different attractions like water falls, different unique plants and trees, small animals as you walk, different bird species and etc.
Canopy walk:
This involves walking on a raised platform, visitors enjoy different attractions from above like different types of monkeys, birds, unique trees and etc.
Best time to visit Nyungwe Forest national park
Late June through early September is dry season and high season at Nyungwe for a good reason: the rain forest receives a reprieve from daily downpours, meaning you can explore all day. But even during the wet season, from March to May, showers generally arrive in the afternoon,giving you ample time for morning activities.
