SELOUS GAME RESERVE/NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
It is the largest national park in Tanzania and also the world largest wildlife sanctuaries. Nyerere National Park (formerly the northern part of Selous Game Reserve). In 2019, it was decided by the Government of Tanzania the northern part of the reserve to be excised to form a new national park known as the Nyerere National Park, in honor of the first president of Tanzania.
The park is known for the great river called Rufiji which is the largest in Tanzania. The park is known for the biggest percentage of wild dog in Tanzania, other wildlife in the park include giraffe, hyenas, Zebras, lions, wildebeests, zebras, hippopotamuses, rhinos, antelopes, African wolves, and a large number of crocodiles and Hippos in the Rufiji River.
Besides the wildlife, interesting places in the park include, Rufiji River, a canyon of 100 meters depth, wetlands and extensive Miombo woodlands.
The Park can be accessed by road or air
Road: From Dar es salaam to Nyerere National Park is about 250km via Kibiti and Air: There are regular flights from Dar es salaam, Kilimanjaro and Arusha to a number of small airstrips in the park.
What to see and do in Nyerere National Park
Game drives:
Explore the big five from the biggest national park in Tanzania, the biggest population of wild dogs are also found here plus many other wildlife. Game drives can be done in morning, in the evening, or the whole day. Among the game drives, the morning one is more rewarding than the others.
Nature walks:
The activity is done with the armed ranger for safety. The guide knows where the trails are to follow. Visitors will be able to view the vegetation, small animals, birds and etc.
Boat cruise:
This is done on River Rufiji, enjoy the gentle cruise on the waters, aquatic attractions like Hippos, different bird species, fishing methods and etc.
Hot air Balloon:
Take an advantage of viewing most of the wild life and other vegetation from a different style other than the usual game drive and cruises. Hot air balloon safaris are unique in that you will view most of attractions from above, wildlife, river, swamps, trees and etc.

Best time to visit Nyerere national park
Nyerere National Park is best visited in the dry season months, during this period, the trails are passible, dusty and not muddy, but during rainy season, the trails are muddy. This is because of the loose Volcanic soil that it dusty during dry season and muddy during rainy season. The park can be visited all year round though a 4×4 safari jeep is highly recommended.
