Travel has changed a lot ever since the world was hit by covid-19 pandemic. Uganda’s mountain gorillas in London will not be something that someone would expect to see or hear at this time. But  yes they came well represented at the world travel market (WTM) London travel show that was in November this year.

About Gorillas in London

The world’s population of mountain gorillas—more than half live in the Virunga Mountains, a range of extinct volcanoes that border the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. The remainder can be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

This means Uganda has got the largest number of the remaining world’s gorillas. In Uganda they are in2 sectors of Bwindi impenetrable national park and mount Mgahinga Gorilla national park. This brings the total to about 1045 according to the last census that was conducted a few years back.

How much to see Gorillas in London

Unfortunately Mountain gorillas will not be tracked in London though they were brought in for exhibition. (Not real Gorillas)

In Uganda we have got to ways that you can track the mountain gorillas. The first one id the normal gorilla tracking that will cost you about $700 per person for about 1 hour only. The second option is Gorilla habituation that costs about $1500 hour person for 4 hours to track the mountain Gorillas in London.

 

Conservation Status

Mountain gorillas are considered endangered by IUCN’s Red List. Not only are mountain gorillas threatened by loss of habitat due to human encroachment, they have also become victims of human violence.

Due to the previous civil war rages in Uganda, Congo and Sudan, remember they are settled in two of these countries. Efforts to conserve mountain gorilla populations have been curtailed, by NGOs, governments and by the local tour operators through sensitization and helping.

Mountain gorillas have also been killed or captured by poachers( most of them local people) , this is where Gorillas walking safaris also embarked on this journey through helping the people mostly ladies around the forest trough buying off their coffee and giving it clients that come on safaris with them.

Where can we go to see Gorillas in London

Currently, the mountain gorilla’s habitat is limited to protected national parks in two regions of Africa. One group of gorillas lives in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The other group is spread over three national parks in the Virungas mountain region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda.

Important information to know Bout Gorillas in London

Because we share about 98.8% DNA Gorillas that come into contact with humans can be vulnerable to human diseases, which gorillas experience in more severe forms. Mountain gorillas can even die from the common cold.

Mountain Gorillas will only be tracked on booked appointments only through the registered tour operators with the Uganda tourism board. This will require prior booking and payments up to 70% minimally 2 months before if you are ready. They are on first come basis and cash payments only.

When ready talk to tour operator about the dressing code which will include light but long trousers and shirts, rain cots( it’s a rain forest) , walking shoes and water bottles.
