ZIWA RHINO SANCTAURY
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a significant conservation area located in Uganda, dedicated to the protection and breeding of the white rhino. Ziwa Rhino sanctuary serves as a key site for efforts to bring the southern white rhinoceros back to Uganda after they were extirpated in the 1980s due to poaching and habitat loss.
The sanctuary focuses on breeding rhinos in a safe environment and aims to eventually reintroduce them into Uganda’s national parks. It plays an essential role in protecting these magnificent creatures from poaching.
Visitors to the sanctuary can participate in guided treks to observe the rhinos in their natural habitat. This experience not only allows guests to view the rhinos up close but also raises awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation well-trained rangers will guide visitors through the bush to wherever the rhinos are at the time.
The sanctuary is home to several other species, including various birds, monkeys, and antelopes, making it a rich ecosystem worth exploring.
Ziwa was finally established in 2005. Its goal was to re-introduce southern white rhinos back to their natural habitat in the environs of Murchison Falls. Initially, 6 southern white rhinos were introduced to the ranch. At the start of 2023, the total has risen to 42 rhinos, and we are expecting that number to grow

Rhino Tracking.
One of the main attractions is the opportunity to go on guided treks to observe the white rhinos in their natural habitat. Knowledgeable guides provide insights about rhino behavior, conservation efforts, and the rich biodiversity of the sanctuary.
Birdwatching
The sanctuary is home to numerous bird species, making it a great spot for bird watching enthusiasts. Various birds can be spotted throughout the sanctuary, including some endemic and migratory species. There are over 300 bird species to be spotted at Ziwa. In the wildlife ranch, there are woodlands, swamps and savannah so they attract a wide variety of bird species.
Nature Walks.
Visitors can enjoy walking trails that offer a chance to explore the diverse ecosystems within the sanctuary. These walks allow for encounters with other wildlife and beautiful scenery. Rangers are well experienced trained and can identify all the species of animals that you’ll see.
There is 27 square miles of woodland, swamps and savannah where you can immerse yourself in natural wilderness.
Education and Awareness
The scenic landscapes and close encounters with wildlife provide excellent opportunities for photography, appealing to both amateur and professional photographers.
The sanctuary often hosts educational programs and talks aimed at raising awareness about rhino conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species.
