The fourth edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon lit up Kasese last week, confirming its status as one of Uganda’s fastest-rising sports tourism events. What began as an ambitious idea has evolved into a movement, drawing thousands of runners, spectators, and visitors from around the world. Today, the event transforms Kasese into a vibrant hub of energy, excitement, and opportunity.
For the local community, the marathon brings a significant economic windfall. Most accommodation facilities are booked out six months in advance, creates benefits that cut across multiple sectors—from farmers providing fresh produce to hoteliers, tour operators, local guides, and nightlife spots, all of which operate at full capacity
Where Sport Meets Safari
Held on August 23, 2025, this year’s marathon was more than a race; it was a celebration of endurance, nature, and the power of tourism. The signature 42km course began at the Equator Monument in Kikorongo, offering athletes a breathtaking journey through the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Few races globally can boast such a rare combination: a marathon where world-class sport meets a wilderness safari
Government and Community at the Heart of Success
The success of this year’s event was powered by strong government backing and private sector collaboration. The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, along with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), provided a solid foundation. Partners such as Uganda Airlines and Nile Breweries further amplified the event’s reach.
From discounted park entry fees and special airfares to extensive promotional campaigns, the support ensured the marathon was part of a broader tourism experience. Local businesses rose to the occasion, showcasing the warmth and hospitality for which Uganda is renowned.
A Global Stage for Uganda
The marathon’s international profile reached new heights this year after receiving accreditation from World Athletics, the global governing body for the sport. Runners from 33 countries participated, including a significant contingent of over 450 Kenyan athletes and participants from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
This global turnout reflects a burgeoning trend in sports and wellness tourism—a multibillion-dollar industry. The Rwenzori Marathon is now positioning Uganda alongside iconic destinations like Cape Town, Athens, and Tokyo, using athletics as a tool for visibility and investment
Transforming Kasese’s Economy
The impact on the Rwenzori region is undeniable. Organizers report that the previous edition generated an estimated UGX 15 billion in local spending. With increased participation and international media coverage this year, the economic ripple effects are expected to be even greater.
Beyond the numbers, the marathon has redefined Kasese’s identity. Once seen primarily as a gateway to the mountains, it is now recognized as a world-class sporting destination. This visibility is yielding results: the UWA has already reported a 30% increase in hikers on the Rwenzori Mountains, a surge directly linked to the marathon’s exposure

More Than a Marathon
At its core, the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is about more than medals; it is about making Ugandan tourism inclusive and sustainable. As Amos Wekesa, the marathon’s team lead, noted:
“This isn’t just about one weekend in Western Uganda. It’s about unlocking long-term benefits, enhancing Uganda’s tourism brand globally, and proving that our country can host high-quality, high-impact international events.”
With each passing year, the marathon carves a new path for Kasese and the nation. It is no longer just a run; it is a journey of transformation.
