The increase in price of a gorilla permit in Uganda has come as a shock to many travellers who had plans of trekking mountain gorillas at $ 700 dollars per person.

Three countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo are home to the world’s largest population of mountain gorillas, with Uganda having half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Every year, thousands of visitors come to Uganda and Rwanda to take part in gorilla trekking trips, cultural encounters as well as enjoying good times in our deep forest with wildlife.

These trips not only provide an up-close encounter with these magnificent creatures, but they also help to fund the conservation of mountain gorillas. The price of a gorilla permit is determined by the Uganda wildlife authority.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Director, Sam Mwandha shared insight into the decision stating “After conducting thorough market research and engaging in constructive discussions with multiple stakeholders, UWA has completed a comprehensive review of our conservation Tariff chat.

This has led to the adjustments in the pricing of some selected park activities. The primary goal of this review was to ensure that our pricing structure remains equitable, competitive and in tune with the current market dynamics and taking in to count the diverse perspective and insight shared during our consultation sessions.

How the price of a gorilla permit in Uganda was increased from June 2024- June 2026

 

Starting from 1st July 2024 to 2026 Uganda gorilla permit prices increase from $700 to $800 for foreign non-residents and $600 to $700 for foreign residents. while Ugandans and East African gorilla permits will now increase from 250, 000 to 300,00 Uganda shillings per person.

A gorilla permit price allows you to spend one full hour with Uganda mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or mountain Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. While other thing will remin constant, there is no major changes visible when the price increses

The new price of gorilla permit increase does not affect the gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga sector-Bwindi Forest, The habituation experience allows you to spend up to 4 hours with a gorilla family that is under the habituation process. Habituation permit costs $1500 and it is not affected by the new gorilla permit prices for 2024-2026

Both habituation and trekking permits prices include entry fees however, if you are going for bird watching or natural walking in either Mgahinga or in Bwindi forest the new entry fee for 2024 to 2026 is $80 per person.

In the new tariff given out UWA chimpanzee trekking permit for Kibale Forest National Park has been increased from $200 to $250 per person for foreign non-residents and foreign residents from $150 to $200 which includes entrance fees.

Chimpanzee habituation permit has increased from $250 to $300 for 2024 to 2026.

South Africans Will Be tracking mountain gorillas for less in Uganda.

Uganda wildlife authority has created a new category for the rest of Africa a side from the east African. Now we have a more subsided rate fees for the rest of east Africa and all those countries that are not in the east African community but in Africa.

Now South Africans can track mountain gorillas for less in Uganda. The rest of Africa special offer $ 500 per person for 1 hour in Bwindi impenetrable forest or the mount Mgahinga gorilla national park.
