AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Gazetted in 1974 as a national park to protect the wildlife and the eco system. The local people around the park are the Masai people and also other people from different places have migrated to this place due to its tourism benefits and also agriculture along the swamps around.

Amboseli is a Masai word which means salty dust. When at Amboseli national park, views of Kilimanjaro Mountain the highest free-standing mountain in the world and also the highest mountain in Africa are prominent. The park was a home to an elephant named Echo the most researched elephant in the world. Books were written about it and documentaries, Echo died at the age of 60 years. Another famous bull elephant here was called Tim, he became popular because of his size and the iconic tusks which reached the ground. He died of natural causes at approximately 50 years.

Amboseli National Park is the best to see herds of elephants up-close. The park protects two of the five main swamps, a dried-up Pleistocene lake and semiarid vegetation. This makes it one of the best places to view wildlife in the world. Besides, elephants, the park is a home to Cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, Masai giraffe, Grant’s zebra, and etc.

The park is a home to 400 species of recorded birds. This makes the park a haven for birds and attracts many tourists who come for birding. With its swamps a dried-up Pleistocene and the semiarid vegetation, these attracts many birds. Some of the birds residents to this place includes pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hamerkop, greater flamingos, Tavete golden weaver and etc.

Best time to visit Amboseli national park

Amboseli National Park is best visited in the dry season months, during this period, the trails are passible, dusty and not muddy, but during rainy season, the trails are muddy. This is because of the loose Volcanic soil that it dusty during dry season and muddy during rainy season. The park can be visited all year round though a 4×4 safari jeep is highly recommended.
